Welcome to this special conference on vaccine development!
The aim of the conference is to discuss some of the conceptual and methodological problems which appear to be responsible for current difficulties experienced in vaccine development.
Although there are many institutional, financial and regulatory impediments to the development of new vaccines, it is clear that the scientific strategies and reductionist approaches prevalent in virology, immunology and structural biology have not been very successful in developing new generations of vaccines. For instance, during the last 30 years thousands of studies have been done to try to develop synthetic peptide vaccines against many viral, bacterial and parasitic diseases as well as against various cancers. However, not a single synthetic peptide vaccine has succeeded in passing phase III clinical trials and has become marketed for human use.
The main purpose of the conference will be to discuss new methodological advances in bioinformatics, systems biology and optical biosensors which hold the promise for overcoming some of the limitations of current approaches to vaccine development.
We very much look forward to you joining us!
